Have you been working as a woodworking craftsman for ages or have you started recently? Whether you’re an experienced craftsman or a total rookie you might want to save some money and you can do it buy purchasing used woodworking equipment instead of new tools. It’s possible to save plenty of money but it’s important to choose the right equipment and to buy the things from the right place.

Who to buy used tools from?

It’s definitely a good idea to try to save some money by purchasing used woodworking equipment but it’s also important to not buy the first used tools you can find. You will be able to find plenty of sellers on the internet and you will also be able to meet many sellers if you start visiting flea markets, but you should keep in mind that some used woodworking equipment can be a waste of money instead of a good investment.

It’s a big difference between the tools you need if you have the woodworking craft as a profession and the tools you need if you just have woodworking as a hobby. You need to be extra careful if you’re a craftsman who has this as a profession. You can’t afford to buy worthless tools that can’t be used for your woodworking projects and that’s why you should only buy your used woodworking equipment from shops who sell used items as a profession. They will be able to meet your demands and you will get what you need and look for. Everyone will be happy with such a deal since you will save money and they will make money.

How old can the tools I buy be?

You might wonder how old the tools you can buy be without getting worthless equipment. The age doesn’t really matter since some machines and tools can be reconditioned. This means the motor might be replaced and that will make an old machine almost as good as a new one. It’s not a good idea to buy a 15 year old machine with the original motor left in it though. That means you will throw away your money and that’s probably the last thing you want.

Try to find some used woodworking equipment that will be yours for a low cost. Don’t consider only the price though, the quality is the most important thing after all and that’s what you should focus on.

Gun collectors love to show off their cache of guns, rifles and ammunition in glass cabinets and for good reasons, too. If you are one of these proud gun collectors, then you will want to transform gun cabinet plans into reality.

It’s in the Details

The first consideration in choosing the final gun cabinet plan is its details. You want plans that are as detailed as possible so much so that even a beginner woodworker such as yourself will be able to successfully complete the project.

You must look for a detailed list of materials so that the materials shopping can be done in one go. You want a detailed set of instructions in a step-by-step manner that there is very little room for doubt as to how the project will progress from start to finish. You also want a detailed blueprint of the gun cabinet that shows where each part fits into the whole project.

So, when browsing through the selection of gun cabinet plans, your first consideration is whether you can actually understand, use and execute it. In a manner of speaking, you want the plan on paper to become a reality in wood, steel and glass.

Do a Headcount

Then, you must also factor in the size of your gun collection. An inventory is necessary since you want the guns to have sufficient space to be highlighted inside the cabinet. Too large a space means that your collection can look pitifully small while too small a space means that the guns will not be highlighted as well as they should be.

The gun cabinet plans may also make room for an expansion on the collection. This is also possible if and when you do have plans to purchase more guns for display in the gun cabinet. By the way, the inventory is also necessary so that you can get a handle on the approximate measurements for the gun cabinet.

Choose the Materials

Then the materials for the gun cabinet must be chosen. Most plans will outline the materials to be used from the type of screws to the kind of wood although other materials like steel and glass are also used.

Work with the type of materials you are comfortable with based on your woodworking skills. For example, if you are a beginner, manufactured panels are a great choice while carpenters can work with both hardwood and softwood for this project.

Safety and Security

Naturally, the gun cabinet plans must also outline the safety and security measures inherent in the finished structures. Keep in mind that guns are dangerous tools in the wrong hands and you definitely will not want your guns to fall into the bad elements of society.

Thus, the chosen plan must detail the location and types of locks, alarms and other security measures necessary to protect your investments. You may even want to contact an alarm company to install the appropriate security devices on the gun cabinet after it is finished.

The right choice from among hundreds of gun cabinet plans can spell the difference between appreciating your gun collection and allowing others to use it for their own purposes.

A wet bar is a good thing to have in the home so it is best to look at home bar plans as early as today. You can entertain surprise and invited guests with a glass of whatever alcoholic beverage desired while you try to get ready for the main party. Better yet, the bar itself is the center of the party.

It’s a Simple Job

Lest you start thinking that a wet bar is a complicated project to undertake, it’s a fairly simple job. You will not be required to secure a carpenter’s education and certification to successfully complete a fully-functional bar just as long you choose to build one within your woodworking skills.

When looking at any woodworking project, your skills with the hammer and saw are the first considerations. If you can complete a woodworking project on your first try using whatever skills you may have with the material, you will be motivated to pursue other projects often requiring advanced methods. This is true with home bar plans as well.

Critical Dimensions

When choosing from among the plans for a home bar, look at the critical dimensions first. You want the bar to fit into the allocated space with plenty of room to move for the bartender/host and the guests. You also want the bar to become an integral part of the room instead of sticking out like a sore thumb.

Standard bars for the home have a finished height of 42 inches. The front overhang will differ in measurement depending on whether bar stools will be added or not. If there are bar stools, the front overhang must be 12 inches but if there are none, 9 inches is sufficient. Of course, the home bar plans must be such that the finished products are stable in every aspect. You don’t want the bar to tip over and crush your guests.

Wall Thickness

The stability of the bar depends largely on the thickness of its wall the general rule being that the wider the walls are, the more stable the entire bar will be. Of course, there are other factors in the stability of the wet bar such as its center of gravity but the walls are the primary determinant.

If you have a small space for the bar, 2×4 woods are sufficient. For larger spaces, you will want to go larger, too, such as the 2×6 and the 2×8 types. The kind of wood used in the choice of home bar plans – cherry, redwood, or cedar, among other types – will depend on your sense of aesthetics, your budget and your skills in working with that particular type of wooden material.

Electrical Requirements

You must also take into consideration the electrical connections that make a wet bar fully functional. You will want electrical connections for the various small appliances that a bar must have in its environs – blender, refrigerator and wine chiller, to name a few of the electronic accessories of a wooden bar. Lighting fixtures must also be installed for practical and aesthetic purposes.

The other aspects of home bar plans like the aesthetic value must also be considered but the practical values must come first. After all, there is no sense in having something as big and as beautiful in the house without it serving a practical function in some way.

In this world where the Internet has virtually everything contained in its millions of sites, it makes perfect sense to get the best bookshelf plans online. You will be able to browse through thousands of these plans for bookshelves in a fast, easy and convenient manner, thanks to search engines and search bars within the sites. In fact, only your hands will do the walking as browsing through the plans only requires a click of the mouse.

But therein also lies the problem. With literally thousands of plans for bookshelves to choose from, the question of which ones to choose can be tricky. After all, everything just seems so excellent on paper, so to speak.

Fortunately, there are ways to choose the best of the best plans for bookshelves. And when we say the best of the best, we mean whatever is best for your needs, preferences and budget.

Woodworking Skills

The best bookshelf plans where you are concerned are the ones that you can actually start and finish on your own. Well, maybe you will require a little help from the kids or from the spouse but for the most part, you can successfully come up with a bookshelf just as it says on the plan.

Thus, if you are still a beginner in woodworking, your best choices are the simplest bookcases with little by way of advanced carpentry skills. For example, you can choose a plan for an open face bookcase with just a few levels, which can then be propped against the wall. You can start with the beginner bookcases and then work your way up.

In contrast, if you are an old hand in woodworking, then complicated bookshelf plans can be tackled with great confidence. Usually, these plans feature complicated details like shelves and drawers in addition to the usual spaces for the books.

Attention to Detail in the Plans

You also want plans for bookshelves that provide no room for second-guessing. This rule applies to both the beginner and the veteran woodworkers since no one wants to guess about something as important as a piece of wooden furniture. There are issues of safety, stability and functionality involved with bookshelves such that the less amount of guessing you have to do, the better you can proceed with the tasks.

The best bookshelf plans are those that provide for three things. First, it must have a complete list of materials from the smallest nails to the biggest board. Second, it should have a set of detailed step-by-step instructions from start to finish. Third, it must have detailed drawings of how the pieces fit and how the final product looks like.

Seek What Others Say

Last, your research into the best plans for bookshelves will allow for many opportunities to know what others are saying about these products. These reviews are great tools when weeding out the bad plans from the good plans in that consumers have actually used the plans. You can then learn from their mistakes or profit from their good choices.

In the end, your choice of bookshelf plans will depend on your needs, preferences and budget. The best advice in this regard is to never settle for less when it comes to bookshelves. Your precious books deserve the best home, so to speak.

Wooden structures and objects have a certain charm to them that the coldness of steel, concrete and glass cannot match. It may be the appeal of the warm wood that speaks of a cozy home. It may be the thought of being connected with the earth in a grounded way. Whatever your motive may be in going for wooden projects, you must start looking at woodworking ideas that can then be transformed into reality.

Go Online

The Internet is a treasure trove of just about everything that man has accumulated through centuries of existence on this planet. Text and pictures as well as audio and video resources for woodworking projects are available in the thousands of sites dedicated to these kinds of endeavors. Even the simple keywords like woodworking projects, ideas and inspirations will generate millions of hits from which you can choose the ones that best fit your needs.

You will find that the ideas for woodworking projects run the gamut to include virtually everything necessary to furnish a palace in wooden furniture and objects of art. Woodworking ideas run the gamut from a simple bench to complex Chinese drawers with secret shelves, from a single bed to a whole set of bedroom furniture, and from a single ornament on the garden to the entire patio.

Depending on the online site, you can either pay for the woodworking plans or get these plans for free. The delivery method can either be through downloads or through courier delivery depending on the complexity of the plans. Pay for the plans if the resulting project is on the complex side.

Go Copy

Flattery is the best form of compliment, which is just as applicable to woodworking ideas as any other product and service. You can go around the neighborhood or in the surrounding area to become inspired with existing wooden structures and objects that other wood artists have made to perfection. You may take pictures, if you want, just so you will not forget.

You may also browse through printed publications like magazines and books for more ideas on woodworking projects. With the numerous publications on this matter, you are sure to find something that will appeal to your senses and will fit your woodworking skills. Plus, you need not pay for the ideas as you can either have them photocopied or scanned for future use. Better yet, you can even become a subscriber, which is also true for going online.

Go Create

Often, the best place to look for woodworking ideas is your own mind. Yes, you are the best fountain of ideas for woodworking projects as you know exactly what you want to spruce up the house. Or to make more wooden furniture at a lower cost, for that matter.

You must have seen other woodworking projects that can serve as your inspiration. For example, you may have seen a charming deck added to the back of an otherwise nondescript house, which instantly livened up the yard. You can follow this idea albeit tweak it a bit to conform to your house’s measurements, your available budget and your woodworking skills.

You can find so many woodworking ideas around. The trick is in choosing the best one from amongst the thousands of possible projects but that should be easy enough when you know what you want.

Carports serve many functions in a house. You can save on the costs of building a full-sized garage and yet still add resale value to your house when the time comes. Your car will still be protected from the elements while you skip on the costs of garage maintenance and the hassles of access with a garage. With such benefits, you simply must start looking at carport plans.

Select the Site

Your first step in selecting the plans for the carport is to select the site. It can be located as an extension to one wall of the house or as a standalone unit. Either option can be good just as long as it is one that provides the most benefit where you are concerned.

Once the site has been identified, you can start looking at the possible plans for the carport. Your final choice of carport plan vis-à-vis the site will depend on the following factors:

Type of soil – For example, if you intend to build in an area with soggy soil, then carport plans with ample drainage, sufficient number of supports and other features to avoid sinking into the soil should be at the top of the shortlist.

Type of weather – The carport plan must provide sufficient protection against Mother Nature depending on the prevalent weather in the area. For example, if you live in an area with plenty of rain and snow, your best choice is a carport plan with a pitched roof.

Type of house – You must also consider how well the carport will blend in with the general construction of the house. We are not just talking of aesthetics but about how the carport can strengthen – or weaken, for that matter – the house’s foundation.

You may have to consult a building professional, say, a carpenter to help in choosing the best in carport plans suitable for your needs. You can then build the carport yourself, which will mean savings since the carpenter’s fee is now out of equation.

Select the Materials

Make the carport as strong as possible, which must start with the materials used. You may think that a tent-like structure will do but when inclement weather comes, you will appreciate the sturdy, durable and functional qualities of a well-built carport. Besides, why spend money rebuilding the carport when you can build it as strong as possible in the first instance?

As you look through the carport plans, one of your considerations is that the materials used will withstand the test of time. The wood must be sufficiently heavy to stand against strong winds but adequately light to move when required. You may just decide to move it from the side of the house to the front yard, in which case the use of bolts is a good tactic.

Even when you want to make the carport a permanent structure, your decision to use strong materials will be well-rewarded. Plus, if the carport is annexed to the house, you need not worry about it undermining the house’s foundation. Of course, you also want the carport to be a beautiful addition to your house but this is secondary.

You must also ask the local authorities about rules regarding the construction of carports. Your choice of carport plans may change when these laws are taken into account but probably not in a big way.

Bunk beds consist of two beds built one on top of the other with a ladder to access the upper bed. These are space-savers especially when there are many children in the house but the number of bedrooms is limited. Depending on the bunk bed plans, these beds can also accommodate adults in a hostel-type setting.

Selection of the Plans

Your choices in plans for bunk beds span the range from single to double as well as standalone or anchored to the wall. Printed publications like trade magazines, craftsman books and home improvement catalogues as well as online sites are the best places to find these plans. You may or may not have to purchase the plans but regardless of the money spent on these blueprints, so to speak, look at the following factors during the selection process:

Look at your woodworking skill levels. Bunk bed plans can be simple with just a few pieces of wood and lumber nailed together or complicated with drawers, shelves and other adjustable features.

Look for the kind of materials within your budget. Although substitution is possible, the quality may not be similar to the expectations on the plans.

Choose the plan with detailed list of materials and detailed step-by-step instructions especially when you are new to woodworking. Guesswork can be a waste of time so avoid it with clear, specific and illustrated plans for bunk beds.

Basically, you are aiming for bunk bed plans that your skill levels can implement. You will then be able to save on the money for carpenter’s labor.

Considerations in Building

You must also consider the standard and personalized features of bunk beds. In the standard sense, a bunk bed will have four posts with one post at every corner of the bed similar to a canopy bed. The bed frame consists of the head and foot crosspieces, of which the finished product will contain the mattress. To keep the foam in place, cross wires are also added while the guard rails on both beds keep the sleepers within the confines of the bed.

As previously mentioned, bunk beds can be standalone beds or wall-anchored beds. Both are suitable for kids and adults although the wall-anchored bunk beds are preferred for children because of greater stability. Well, of course, even a standalone bed must be constructed for stability or else both sleepers will be harmed when it goes tumbling down.

Plus, if you are building one for the use of children, your final choice from amongst many bunk bed plans must contain certain safety features. Keep in mind that you want kids to be safe especially in light of the Consumer Product safety Commission’s warning that children have been fatally trapped under the rails of bunk beds. These safety features include:

Mattresses must cover the frame space lest a child’s arm or leg slips through the space.

Foundations must also have supports like slats and cross wires to prevent dislodgment from the bed.

The supports must be securely fastened to the ledges of the upper and lower bunk beds with screws and bolts.

You should also educate kids about safety while using the beds. After all, bunk bed plans are just that – plans. It is up to the parent to make it safe for their kids during construction.

Using free woodwork plans is a great idea provided you have a good set of plans for a project that matches both your skill level and interest. Woodworking magazines have free woodwork plans that can be downloaded or there are a lot of different sites to use online. The best part about these plans is that they do not cost anything and you can find plans for almost any project ranging from a simple pencil holder to a wooden lathe turned spindle cradle or fold-able rocker.

The best plans are those from various woodworking magazines because they are used for presenting and explaining the plans in a way that is easy for the woodworker to understand. Free woodwork plans are a definite advantage when you are starting to learn how to work with wood because of their low cost the ease of finding them.

After you have been working with wood for a while and progressed from the beginning stages to the point where you are working with more advanced projects, it is important to keep finding free woodwork plans that keep your interest and that will challenge you in your hobby.

One important thing to remember when using free woodwork plans is that you need to make sure that they are correct in their measurements and figures. If a plan is out of alignment by just a fraction of an inch, the whole project could be off by much more then that or even not turn out to be salvageable. This is one of the cons against using free plans, so be careful to check them carefully. Another problem that could happen is the type of wood required could vary from one section of the country to another, requiring a difference in cost or time required to finish the project.

Woodworking is a craft that requires a good deal of planning and precision, with quite a number of opportunities for mistakes as well as wonderful chances to make an item that will be a cherished heirloom to be handed down from parent to child. If your children are interested, you can begin to teach them how to make projects from wood, creating a tradition of woodworking within your own family members.

A benefit to working with a free woodwork plan is that once you have one that does work, it will solve most of the problem of figuring out exactly how to cut the wood to fit the project you are making. Many projects and plans also have measurements to make the size of the project larger or smaller, depending on what you decide to make. Double check the figures and make sure that the information is correct before you begin and it will make the project easier to build.

Free woodworking plans definitely have their good points and bad points and it is a good idea to beware of plans that do not seem to look right or sound right when you study them. If you take time to do a bit of research or go with a trusted name for free woodworker plans, then you will be able to create many great and useful items with your hands, a few tools and wood.
